The Bard speaks to Microtech Gefell

Gefell microphones solved the problems at a recent recording of ‘Othello’ at Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre in London. The recording was an HD production with 5.1 surround sound for the Heritage Theatre Company, under contract from Japan’s national broadcaster NHK, and available on DVD.
Sound design and recording were carried out by Alan Cridford of First Sense Ltd., who selected a pair of Gefell KEM 970 ‘Line Array’ mics (pictured left) with their wide azimuth polar characteristic to cover the whole stage area. The very narrow (30 deg.) vertical characteristic overshot the courtyard audience to significantly reduce noise from the ‘promenaders’ and also the occasional aircraft passing over the open-air theatre. Gefell M930 mics were also used at the rear of the theatre for back audience entrances, and backstage to pick up the off-stage music.
