The BBC has ordered a significant quantity of Gefell condenser microphones for the West One project, with a total of 30 microphones so far delivered. The Gefell M930 microphones were selected for presenter and speech applications in Radio 2 and Radio 4, 6 Music and BBC 7, whilst the M950 subcardioid type was chosen for music production in Flagship studio 80A, which is in daily use for Radio 3’s Drivetime programme ‘In Tune.’

Major factors in the choice included sonic quality, and the remarkably small physical size of these microphones - a critical factor in minimising sight-line restrictions with the increasing use of monitor screens and equipment furniture that has become a feature of the modern broadcast studio.

The redevelopment of Broadcasting House in the centre of London is the BBC's single largest capital project ever, taking over ten years from inception to final delivery.

When complete in 2010, this 80,000 square metre structure will provide state-of-the-art production and broadcast facilities for staff in Radio & Music, News and the World Service, and be the hub of the BBC's national and international live output.

The new Broadcasting House Project will also call upon top architects, designers and artists, in order to create a truly inspirational and creative centre for the BBC of the 21st century, as well as a brand new landmark for central London.

The Gefell M 930 and M 950 belong to a range of large diaphragm microphones renowned for their sonic performance and small physical size. Photovoltaic decoupling of the phantom power supply together with other technological developments produces an outstandingly low self-noise contribution of only 7dBA which, combined with a max SPL of 142 dB puts these microphones in a world leading class.
